9/6/2006 - correction of error listing for Ruston, Louisiana.  The original Ruston Municipal airport (code RSN) closed in 1994 (it still was charted on the Memphis 1995 SAC.  A new airport was built at Ruston called Ruston Regional (originally coded 3L5 and later recoded to RSN).  Ruston Regional was not on the 1991 Memphis SAC.  Likely it was constructed in the 1994/5 time frame and is charted on the 1995 Memphis SAC.

Update 9/3/2006 - The annual update based on the latest version of the FAA 5010 data base.  A total of 8 fields added (including one field that had been previously listed as closed is listed in the 5010 data base so the status has been changed to active again) and two closures.  One closure is the Lucien Field at Shreveport (code 33LS).  This airfield had been operational from about 1947/8 until recently.  It is no longer listed in the 5010 data base or at AirNav.

Update 6/15/2006 - In the Shreveport area (Q-S button on the left), the Texaco and Riverside fields have been link as being on the same field.  It is unclear exactly what happened here.  The earliest entry for Texaco was in 1929 and it appears in the DESCRIPTIONS OF AIRPORTS AND LANDING FIELDS IN THE UNITED STATES, CAA Bulletin No. 2, dated 9/1/1931 but does not appear in the 1934 directory.  There is a long gap and the next reference occurs in 1948 in the Haire Airport Directory.  It is charted on the Shreveport SAC and the last entry is in the 1953 Aviation Week directory.  It is not in the 1955 directory.  It appears that was either closed or unlisted from around 1933 till 1947.  Best information I have received to date is that Texaco did close down and then another party reopened the field in the late 1940s.  It closed again by the mid 1950s.  You can check out the pictures that are there under the Louisiana section at http://www.airfields-freeman.com/, Paul Freeman's excellent website.

Update 10/13/05 - Continue to fix minor problems and errors.  Some additional info added.

Update: 10/9/05 - This is the first follow up to the initial release of this data base.  Some added data and corrections to various errors and typos.

This is the initial release of the Louisiana data base.   Work is continuing on this data base and changes and corrections will be made from time to time.  These data bases are works in progress.

As per the other data bases, helicopter fields are not normally entered into this data base unless something unique and would be included.  Ultra-light airfields that are less than 1000 feet in length are normally not included either.

Louisiana has had a large number of Seaplane Bases (SPB) and they have been incorporated into the data base.  Most of the SPBs are now closed (replaced by helicopter operations).

One thing that have noted in gathering the information on airfields/airports in Louisiana is the wide variations in elevation readings.  Many are very inconsistent and assume that a number are errors in entry in directories or on charts.  Since about 2000, the elevations for many airfields have now been surveyed in and are considered accurate.  Others still state "estimate".

This is the abridged version of the Louisiana main data base.  All airfields are presented with earliest and latest entries along with anything that helps to understand the history of the airfield (name changes, special information, etc.).  The unabridged version is a very large excel spreadsheet and is currently approximately 1.0MB in size with over 3,500 entries in it.  Entries can vary from a single entry for an airfield to multiple entries, in chronological order, for an airfield (especially where name changes or operational status varied.

The full data base is available by special request.
