Update information:
Hyperlinks are active and will bring up pictures. Those links in the field name column generally have aerial and other pictures. Links in the town column are charts and maps. Hopefully all links work. Additional sections will get pictures in the future. In the near future, an "unknowns" section will be available. This will consolidate all of the unknowns or unidentified airfields into a single data base. In case you noticed in the remarks on some of the newer fields that do not have chart data a comment "Not charted (yet)". That signifies I have checked the FAA 5010 data base and under the remarks section to see if the owner requested the field to not be charted. He the owner had no such comment, then I put "(yet)".
If you are interested in World War II airfields - see the section dealing with WW2. It has the most complete data covering Texas. More information is there than in the main data base. INTRODUCTION:
This is the reformatted Texas section. In the past, the entire data base would be updated and released as a complete entity. It will be easier to release updates by alphabetically working on the data base. With this update, the "A" cities/towns have been updated and now the update date and version number will be below the button that takes you to the data. "Unknown" listings are broken out and now listed as unknowns - not part of the bottom line total. Unknowns could be active, inactive or closed. Finding data about these has been difficult. Often they are found only by "flying" over the terrain using such tools as Google EarthTM or TerraserverTM or by use of topographic maps. Some folks have been kind and sent me info or pointing out an unknown.
Coordinates that are estimates are identified by use of red instead of typical black for the numbers. For the year where "current" is used, this signifies the field is still listed in the FAA 5010 data base and shown on current charts (principally Sectional Aeronautical Charts - SAC). There are occasions that I can not explain, an airfield is not charted but continues in the FAA 5010 data base. When investigating these fields, for most, there is no evidence the field is still there (using Google EarthTM or TerraserverTM). Guess the right hand is not communicating well with the left hand in the FAA. Some are just iffy as still really being active. Dashes are used when no data has been found for a particular entry.
An interesting unidentified airfield is located on the south east side of Marfa (Presidio County), Texas. I witnessed an aircraft landing at this field in February 2006. I believe it is associated with McGuire Ranch located at the same location. The data base currently lists 26 unknowns and I am investigating about 50 more unidentified airfields in Texas. And like there are others. Most likely, all can be attributed to private users and generally located in rural areas.

As mentioned in the
"gathering section" (
), doing research on old fields can
take some detective work. Figuring out the
location of the original Amarillo Municipal airport took
a lot of work. Had assumed it was a bit closer to
town based on charts and descriptions. A old
photograph turned up that showed some features that
could be used to create an overlay on the current
"urban" color high resolution photograph on Terraserver.

Prior to finding the old photograph, working with the 1944 Oklahoma City SAC, the location was estimated to be a triangle bounded by roads C, E, and F.

Finding the same features in the 2002 urban photograph allowed for locating the position of the airfield.

Zooming in to the where the runways intersected, you actually see remains of the runway!
It was rewarding to work out the correct location of the airfield and find some remains. No other remains can be found for the Amarillo Municipal. The airfield was owned by the city as was the English Airfield. English Field was located further to the east and is operational today as Amarillo's International Airport.
There was an earlier location of the Amarillo Municipal, but the best we have so far is the distance and current data would have it adjoining the Municipal airfield just to the east. The picture below shows the relationship between the Municipal and English.

This is the abridged version of the Texas main data base. All airfields are presented with earliest and latest entries along with anything that helps to understand the history of the airfield (name changes, etc.).
The unabridged version is a very large excel spreadsheet and is currently approximately 10.5MB in size with over 30,000 data entries in it. The full data base, including all hyperlinks to external data, is over 450MB in size. Entries can vary from a single entry for an airfield, to some that have been around for a long time may have over 50+ entries.
