6200x150(NE/SW);
6200x150(NNW/SSE); 5000x500 grass runway (NNE/SSW); 11.5 miles SSW; This is
an unusual "joint" usage airfield.
It started as Raton Municipal airport about 1935. About 1940, a CAA beacon was installed ID =
42; Only in directories do they indicate this joint usage as a Municipal and
CAA Intermediate site 24 plus the beacon;
The last entry I can find is 1948 of the "joint" usage. I assume it ended about 1950. It is possible that the "joint"
arrangement would allow the CAA to pay for putting in paved runways which
appear at this time frame too. Now
Raton Muni/Crews Airport (RTN). This
may not have been a true intermediate airfield. More work is needed to confirm exactly what
was going on. |

same, there is one discrepancy - distance from El Paso. Able is listed as being 90 miles east and
Salt Flat as 80 miles east. Otherwise,
the descriptions match. There is a
possibility that these are two separate fields and Able was closed down about
late 1933 and Salt Flat opened up. |

It could be the beacon and miss identified as an intermediate; on the

appears that this field has been an intermediate twice - first around 1932
