UTAH

Active:  92      Closed/Inactive:  78       Total:   180

Unknown status:  15

Update 09/23/2009 - this is a major update and includes adding pictures, charts, etc.  The next is a slightly lower number of active airfields in Utah.  Down from 100 to 92.  There is one, the 93rd, I have classified as closed despite continuing to be carried in the FAA database.  The runway is completely rundown and looks unusable.   Closed/inactive went from 78 to 100.  Net total went from 178 to 180.  The number of unknowns jumped from 3 up to 15 and I am sure there are likely more.

As seen in the picture blow (scan of the 1958 Utah State Aeronautical Chart, southeast corner), there were numerous airstrips depicted.  The ones with the derrick in side were for oil exploration and those with a small pick/shovel were for mining.  There were various marked as E with a diagonal bar through it.  None of these were charted on regular USGS/NOAA charts or in any listings.  I searched using Google Earth and could not find remains of any, but with nothing more than the chart, it is difficult to know if I have looked in the exact right spots.  Wonder how many of those were real?

Update 10/06/2007 - added Delle AF Aux at Delle UT and corrected the coordinates for Knolls Intermediate CAA Site.  Also changed is the accounting of airfields.  A class of unknown had been carried as closed are not separated out as a separate category.

The Delle airfield was apparently built during the WW2 period as an auxiliary to Wendover AAF and Salt Lake City AAB.  Sometime later on, the area was privately purchased and the owner paved two of the runways and these are still visible.  The field has apparently never been charted or listed in major airport directories.

There are a number of "unknown" airfields listed in this data base.  These are clearly those used by the military and are located on the large Dugway Proving Range. These airfields are likely target airfields and highly unlikely any aerial operations have taken place on them.  Many have objects on the "field" (e.g. mockup or real aircraft) and many have bomb pock marks on them.
