** UPDATE INFORMATION **

Update 12/04/2006  This is another major update with new additions and corrections.  Too many changes to identify individually here.  I obtained a book printed in 1920.  The book is "Municipal Landing Fields and Airports" edited and compiled by George Seay Wheat printed by G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1920.  The book contains an appendix which lists airfields by each state.  The data is minimal and only identifies the fields as "emergency usage", "municipal" and "Government fields".  Names and location are not provided.  A close review of the data base has added some additional information about some of the airfields (start or end dates) and corrections.  The review used "new" sectional aeronautical charts, in particular, Oklahoma City and Tulsa SACs.  The "new" charts are early 1940s mainly.

Update 11/18/2006 - a major update and corrections

Received a 1929 Ran McNally Air Trails directory and map for Oklahoma.  Seven "new" airfields have been added as a result of this new information.

Received a copy of an Oklahoma 1950 Airport Directory from Carl Gregory of Tulsa.  This turned out to be a major effort as many airfields were identified for the first time.  The majority were private airfields and all are now closed/inactive.  Many of these have not been charted.  Approximately 129 of these fields have been added which has made a significant jump in the total for OK.

Also took this opportunity to do updates based on new aeronautical charts and directories that I have now acquired too.

As a result of this effort, several errors were detected.  The first was for Hollis, OK.  I had identified one Hollis municipal airport which turned out to be an error.  There were two - one started off being named Spradlin, later changed to Hollis and is now named Ray Preston and is active (code OK05).  Spradlin started approximately in 1945 and is still operational.

This is all sorted out now and the Hollis Municipal (code O35 - previously code was OK07) started approximately 1968 and is still active.

Also misidentified was the airfields at Wilburton, OK.  The first Wilburton airfield came into existence at about 1950 and was associated with Eastern Oklahoma A&M College.  This field was closed about 1963-64 when a new field was constructed several miles further west.  The "new" Wilburton Municipal was opened about 1964-65 and is active now (code H05).

I took this opportunity to re-organize the airfields in Tulsa, they are now alphabetical and bold font is used for the start of each airfield.  This has also been done for Oklahoma City.  Hopefully this makes things better.

A comment on the spelling of "Wewoka" - earlier, Mr. C. Gregory was kind in pointing out the spelling as I had it spelled "Weewoka" was wrong.  During this effort, numerous errors exist for this town and many continue to spell it "Weewoka"!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 9/04/2006 update - this is the annual update to the current FAA 5010 data base.  39 private airfields have been added with this update.  Four fields had a status change from closed to active (apparently those four fields had little data since 1986 and the assumption made was they were closed/inactive).  Sometimes, owners request no charting and that may have occurred.  There were no closures noted in this update.

11/11/2005 - this is a major update.  New items added, corrections, etc.  Even though not visible in this abridged version of the data base, over 35% additional data points have been added.  The fidelity of this version has been improved over the previous release.

10/21/05 - update to the data base.  Principally all in the Oklahoma panhandle section.  Incorporated a number of updates including Kerrick, Texas which actually has had two airfields (one active, one inactive) but the airfields are actually located in Oklahoma on the north side of the border with Texas.  Also updates to Boise City, Guymon - clarified that it has had a total of three airports (two inactive, one active), added Straight Station to Hooker and other updates.

9/29/05 - Minor update to this page.  The "Weewoka" is a spelling error on many aeronautical charts.  The correct spelling is "Wewoka".  That has been corrected but I had forgot to update this page.  Everything is now correct. (Thanks Carl!)

8/1/2005 update incorporates data from the Dept. of Commerce Aeronautics Branch Bulletin No. 5 dated April 15, 1929.  The data contained in the bulletin consists of a listing of airfields.  No other data is contained.  Thus, some of the closed airfields listed in this update may turn out to belong to another airfield that shows up in 1931.  All that was there to work with was names and type.  Bulletin listed types as military (army/navy), intermediate, commercial, or auxiliary.  No coordinates or directions are provided.  The entries for Tulsa are for McIntyre Airport which was already in the data base and "Tulsa Airport" - commercial.  I have listed this under Tulsa Commercial airport but it could have been Tulsa municipal.  I am still researching when Tulsa Municipal (current airport) started.

7/25/2005 update incorporates data mainly from 1931 to 1946.  I have used data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Aeronautics Branch's Airway Bulletin No. 2 "DESCRIPTIONS OF AIRPORTS AND LANDING FIELDS IN THE UNITED STATES" directories.  These documents, printed twice a year, started in the early 1930s and ended about 1941.  They contain a wealth of information.  Also used are two (1934 and 1939) AIRPORTS AND ESTABLISHED LANDING FIELDS IN THE UNITED STATES printed by The Airport Directory Company of Hackensack NY.  "The Airport Directory" printed by Haire Publishing cover 1946 and 1948.  Also used recently received aeronautical charts from as early as 1941 through 1949 too.  I have corrected some errors I had about some airports/airfields so hopefully, this update is much better than the earlier versions.  Due to increase in size, four sections are now used (from three previously).

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

This is the abridged version of the Oklahoma main data base.  All airfields are presented with earliest and latest entries along with anything that helps to understand the history of the airfield (name changes, etc.).  The unabridged version is a very large excel spreadsheet and is currently approximately 0.9MB in size with over 3,400 entries in it.  Entries can vary from a single entry for an airfield, to some that have been around for a long time may have over 30 entries.

A good bit of new data has been entered with this update.  I have done something a bit different with Oklahoma data as compared to the other states.  Generally, I have sorted the data by the name of the town first, then by the airfield’s name and then by the year of the line entry.  For Oklahoma, I am trying to change the organization by grouping the names of the airfield together.  Thus, if a field started off with a name “A”, and later changed to “B” and finally to “C”, I have them all listed together and chronologically with the same coordinates for all listings of the airfield.  You might note too that there can be variations in elevation of a given airfield of the years.  Not sure why, maybe just better surveying techniques/technology used – especially now with GPS.
