The Air Force claimed control of the base in 1951, and renamed it Vincent Air Force Base in 1956.   In 1959, the base was signed over to the U.S. Navy. In 1962 the base was turned over to the U.S. Army Materiel Command, and designated Yuma Proving Ground. In 1973 the base officially received its full name: U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground. The following year the base was designated as a Department of Defense Major Range and Test Facility Base.
