Benjamin Fly convinced the federal government to purchase 640 acres of desert land from Yuma County. The landing strip that was built thereafter became known as Fly Field.  Located 4 ½ miles southeast of the town of Yuma, Arizona. Originally built in 1928 by the Army Air Corps and named Fly Field. Training center for twin-engine aircraft, gunnery students and radar operators. Training began on January 1, 1943. Temporarily deactivated at the end of the war.  The base, located off Avenue 3E, encompasses five square miles, has access to 2.8 million acres of training ranges, and incorporates an extra-long runway, which is shared with the Yuma International Airport.
